Crying is Like Bathing the Soul

Updated: May 27, 2023

Crying is like bathing the soul. When was the last time you cleansed?

I remember calling someone dear to me after I felt like he was in pain. When he answered the phone, I was met with silence. After I repeated “hello” a few times, he finally replied in a low, somewhat defeated tone. He wasn’t able to answer me immediately because he was fighting back tears. My final “hello” was met with a flow of tears and a confession that he needed to cry. A tough guy, he was hurting over a relationship that was ending, but while he was talking, he kept clearing his throat. It was his way of battling the tears that he was so desperately trying to suppress. Since I could tell that he was a bit embarrassed about crying, I suggested to him “just let it out,” and he responded that he did not recall the last time he had allowed himself to cry in that manner, and he almost refused. It hurt me to hear him in such distress, but what was worse was that he felt it a sign of weakness to cry in the first place. While I assured him that I would be a listening ear if he needed it, we didn’t talk long. In between the small talk, he did allow himself to cry, but he’d apologize each time the tears presented themselves.

I was thinking of him in that moment and so many others who hold back the tears. I am a victim of this thought pattern too…holding back tears. I had to change my thought pattern.

Tears cleanse. They clear out the emotional residue and create a pure pathway for renewal, rebirth, and recharge. They soothe the soul and can reignite the mind and heart. Tears are in fact a gift.
